It was another weekend of pivotal results in the Thai League. Chief among them, Bangkok United managed a victory over Buriram for the first time since 2014 to get their season back on track. Chonburi scored a stunning seven goals past Khon Kaen United without reply, going top of the league as Samut Prakan City were held to a draw against Police Tero. Elsewhere, Prachuap, Suphanburi and Muangthong all picked up their first wins of the season, while Chiangmai United remain rooted to the bottom after a draw with Nakhon Ratchasima.
Here are our picks for the standout players from the weekend:
Goalkeeper – Chanin Sae-Ear (Chonburi): Despite his side’s dominance, Chanin was kept busy by Khon Kaen United’s frequent (and often overly enthusiastic) counter-attacks. The 29-year-old made a number of impressive saves to earn his clean sheet.
Defender – Manuel Bihr (Bangkok United): The Thai-German central defender looked back to his best on Saturday evening, stepping up to the occasion and helping Bangkok United keep a clean sheet against Buriram.
Defender – Adnan Orahovac (Prachuap FC): The Killer Wasps’ captain played a crucial role in the heart of defence, marshalling the side to keep a dominant Chiangrai at bay. His efforts were eventually rewarded with a surprise comeback victory.
Defender – Chatchai Saengdao (Muangthong United): The 24-year-old centre-back made a number of impressive last-ditch tackles to protect his side’s lead, and has easily become one of the first names on the team sheet for the Kirin.
Midfielder – Ratchanat Arunyapairot (Suphanburi FC): The central midfielder had a day to remember, as he netted a brace to lead his side to a surprise victory over Port FC. He scored his first from the penalty spot and his second with an excellent free kick.
Midfielder – Pokklaw Anan (Bangkok United): The energetic box-to-box midfielder showed his quality against Buriram, scoring the first before teeing up Heberty for the second, both a result of his powerful driving runs into the final third.
Midfielder – Worachit Kanitsribampen (Chonburi FC): The attacking midfielder has looked sharp and dangerous so far this season, and put in a truly memorable performance against Khon Kaen United with three goals and an assist to his name.
Winger – Apichart Denman (Prachuap FC): After coming on as a substitute, the former Buriram academy player turned the game on its head for Prachuap by scoring two goals, including the winner in added time.
Winger – Willian Popp (Muangthong United): The Brazilian winger hit a brace against Ratchaburi to give Muangthong their first win of the season, and take his personal tally to four goals from three outings at the start of this campaign.
Striker – Heberty (Bangkok United): Brought in to make the difference in the big games, Heberty delivered in fine fashion for the Angels on Saturday. He was on hand to set up Pokklaw Anan for the first goal, before scoring the second to put the game beyond doubt.
Striker – Dennis Murillo (Chonburi FC): The Brazilian forward scored a stunning FOUR goals past Khon Kaen United on Saturday. This incredible display took his tally to seven strikes from four games, marking an excellent start to his time with the Sharks.
