Thai League 2020 Club Profiles: Bangkok United

Bangkok United

Permanent fixtures in the Top Five since 2015, the Bangkok Angels haven’t quite managed to take the final step and become champions. Two runners-up finishes have been impressive but the club has big ambitions and desperately wants a Thai title and AFC Champions League football.

Head coach

Mano Polking has been at the club since 2014 – a remarkable length of service for a foreign manager in Thailand. The Brazilian’s sides are known for playing expansive attacking football but things have also tightened up at the back in the last couple of years.

Key players

Hajime Hosogai (MIDFIELD) – The former Hertha Berlin and Japan midfielder recently turned 34 but his early season form suggested that he had found a new lease of life following an indifferent year at Buriram United.

Vander Luiz (PLAYMAKER) – When Vander is on form, he is among the finest talents in the league. He is also among the most fouled players, so more protection from referees is required if he is to avoid the injuries that affected him in 2019.

Rising star

Anon Amornlerdsak (ATTACKING MIDFIELDER) – Anon has already built up significant T1 experience from his time at Buriram United and his first season at Bangkok United. Still only 22, he has been capped by his country and looks ready to become a key player for his club.

Notable former players

Romain Gasmi, Mario Gjurovski, Dragan Boskovic

What’s to like?

They have a reputation for playing attractive attacking football and they consistently wear some of the best kits.
